The Medical interpreter – Interpreter training

This 40-hour course prepares bilingual individuals to support the communicative autonomy of patients and medical providers as qualified interpreters. The curriculum, developed by Cross Cultural Communications, covers the role of the interpreter, the profession of medical interpreting, protocols and skills, guidelines for if, when, and how to intervene as the interpreter, and healthcare laws and terminology. The course qualifies and prepares interpreters to take national certification examinations with CCHI or NBCMI.

Prerequisites

In order to enroll in this course, you must:

  • Have or obtain proof of language proficiency in English and at least one other language that you will be interpreting in
  • Be 18 years of age or older
  • Have a high school diploma, GED certificate, or university/college degree (this may also count as proof of language proficiency)
  • Be able to attend all 40 hours of training via Zoom

  • When and how to intervene in a way that supports communicative autonomy
  • Healthcare-specific considerations for community interpreters
  • How to advance the profession by upholding role boundaries and educating stakeholders about the role of the interpreter

Total Tuition: $750.00

  • Discounted rate available for active interpreters who have completed assignments within the last month
  • Eligibility will be verified by a LAMP supervisor

Requirements:  

  • Live online training via Zoom: Attendance is required for all 10 sessions.
  • Participants will need a personal computer, fast internet connection, and headset or headphones with microphone for the class.
  • Full Participation: Completion of all training sessions is mandatory.
  • Registration Fee: Non-refundable.     
  • Additional Fees: A $75.00 language assessment fee may apply if needed.
  • Class Cancellation: LAMP reserves the right to cancel the class if the minimum number of participants is not reached.
