Mastering Medication for Interpreters: Part 2

Mastering Medication for Interpreters

Medical interpreters often come across medication lists in various settings, such as routine medical appointments, surgery prep, hospitals, and nursing classrooms. Many of these medications can be challenging to pronounce in English and difficult to spell in American Sign Language (ASL). They can also be hard to understand when verbalized or fingerspelled.

This multi-part training is designed to help ASL interpreters become familiar with commonly prescribed medications, improving both comprehension and confidence when faced with their names. Through this course, interpreters will gain the knowledge to accurately interpret medication names in medical, mental health, and educational settings, ensuring better communication and understanding.

Who is it for?

  • Active American Sign Language (ASL) Interpreters
  • ITP Students

What does it cover?

Participants of this training will learn:

  • Properly pronounce the second 50 most prescribed medications in English
  • Fingerspell the second 50 most prescribed medications in American Sign Language
  • Recognize and voice the second 50 most prescribed medications when fingerspelled in ASL
  • Understand and Describe the uses of the second 50 most prescribed medications

why this training matters:

Recognizing medication names can significantly improve your accuracy as an interpreter. For example, if a doctor mistakenly suggests Advil for a patient with kidney disease, knowing that Advil is contraindicated for this condition can prompt you to ask for clarification. Similarly, if a patient struggles to fingerspell a medication, you can identify the correct word and assist the patient in ensuring clarity.

As interpreters, we may not be healthcare professionals, but we play a vital role in the medical team, ensuring smooth communication and understanding between patients and providers.
