Big Things Are Happening at LAMP
As an organization dedicated to bridging as many language gaps as possible, we have decided to take our suite of language services, even further! Our biggest initiative is expanding our services beyond the St. Louis region; into larger, rural markets such as Springfield, Columbia, and Jefferson City. This rapid expansion includes the full range of our services, including targeted in-person recruits, Video Remote Interpreting (VRI), and newly improved over the phone abilities.
In order to increase our efforts to help reduce as many cultural and linguistic barriers as possible LAMP added American Sign Language (ASL) to our inventory of languages offered. We are ecstatic to extend our services to the deaf and hard of hearing community. We hope that with our help we can eliminate disparities in care for ASL clients seeking health and support services in the St. Louis region.
Our newly added video remote interpreting system, allows LAMP to provide trained interpreters, to anyone throughout the nation who needs our services. Video Remote Interpreting is only available to the providers- it is not an option for patients- It allows providers to help patients who are already present at their facilities and need language services. This service is meant as a back-up when an in person interpreter is not available.
We recently modified our over the phone interpreting service (OPI) as well; this re-working is intended to make it more beneficial to patients and providers! Some new features include specific lines and extensions for languages, so that when patients call they are immediately assisted by an employee who speaks their native language. They will also be able to hear all messages in their native language. Much like VRI, is not meant to replace in-person interpreting, but is used as a backup solution when the need arises. Our lines are open 24/7, despite being after regular business hours. This ensures patients have access to our services whenever the need arises. Most agencies would not have an open line because it is unpaid work, so why has LAMP made a point to make this possible? Simply put, it is a part of our mission and we want to foster relationships with patients built on trust and the knowledge that we are here to help them whenever they are in need.
LAMP is also proud to announce that in as part of our growth we now have the distinction of being an agency of Catholic Charities, not a program of Catholic Family Services, which
has opened the door for LAMP to accept contributions. Our plan is to use all proceeds for a scholarship fund to help qualified, bilingual people afford necessary training to become certified medical and legal interpreters and translators. It will also help interpreters who are already certified, but who need to stay active within the field to maintain licensing- this includes all foreign language and sign language interpreters.
In December 2015, we collaborated with MindsEye Radio and area medical providers to produce the Health Beyond Barriers podcasts. These podcasts serve to educate members of the community who cannot read the written word on important health topics each month, but we welcome all to listen to and enjoy them. Each podcast is translated into the following languages:
We value the opportunity to improve lives by educating individuals on important health and wellness topics. To find and listen to one which interests you, click here!
What better way to punctuate all of these innovative, big changes, than with a new look! After many years of serving the community, our organization has grown tremendously and we felt that our old branding and website no longer reflected the cultural diversity of our LAMP family. So, with the help of our esteemed friends at 2e Creative, we made a few changes. This month marks the launch of our new website. Head over and check it out by clicking here.
Overwhelmed does not even begin to describe how our LAMP family felt when we were selected to have some pro bono work completed by 2e Creative. Each year 2e crafts strategic marketing campaigns on behalf of one or two area nonprofits that, like 2e, specialize in healthcare and health-related services. We would like to give a special thanks to their team for the all of their around the clock, dedicated work on our new branding and modern, breathtaking website. We could not have asked for a more talented team to help us on this massive undertaking- They are truly above and beyond!
